Sources & method
Where the data comes from
Since 14 April 2025 the EU AFIR regulation (article 20) requires operators of public chargers to publish location, availability and ad-hoc price for free through each country’s National Access Point.
- appmire — open bundle (ODbL-1.0) of the official National Access Point feeds. Currently Austria, Australia, Åland Islands, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Finland, United Kingdom, Isle of Man, Netherlands, Poland and United States. New countries appear automatically.
- Eco-Movement — official Belgian NAP feed (DATEX II, AFIR profile), used directly when a token is configured.
- Road / E-Flux — open OCPI files. Road publishes without a VAT field; per OCPI those prices are excl. VAT, so we add the country’s VAT.
- Open Charge Map — worldwide registry (CC BY 4.0 plus its data providers) for countries without open official feeds, covering every other country in the world: the Americas, Africa, Asia, Oceania and the rest of Europe (only countries where it lists chargers appear). Prices there are community free text: we only use unambiguous per-kWh prices or “free”, always marked ≈.
- OpenStreetMap — © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL 1.0), via the Overpass API: charging stations in the countries where Open Charge Map has little or nothing (Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Central Asia, the Pacific, …). Stations within ±60 m of another source are left out as duplicates. Operator, sockets and power come from the tags; a price only from an unambiguous “charge” tag (or fee=no: free), marked ≈.
- Operator & press listings — for countries where no open dataset lists any charger, we add stations that operators, utilities, governments or the press publish, each with a link to its source. A station is only added when its location points to a specific building or place; prices only when the source states them, marked ≈. In about 60 countries where open map data proved unreliable (phone-charging kiosks, e-motorbike points), only these checked stations are shown.
- Antwerpen Laadt — tariffs from antwerpenlaadt.be for TotalEnergies chargers in Antwerp without a price in the feed. Marked ≈.
- UK open data — the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 require operators to publish locations and prices as open OCPI data. We read every feed that works without a key (char.gy, ChargePlace Scotland, EVolt, Pogo, GeniePoint, Urban Fox). Prices without a VAT field are excl. VAT (OCPI), so we add 20 %.
- IRVE (data.gouv.fr) — France’s national charger register. The official AFIR feed has no prices, so we read the operator’s price text from the register, convert what is unambiguous and link it by charge point ID. Always marked ≈ with the original text.
European feeds are refreshed about every 30 minutes, Open Charge Map daily. Every price shows its source and time.
How we calculate the price
We simulate every session minute by minute: kWh price, session fee, per-minute price, idle fee, kWh tiers and peak/off-peak — in the charger’s local time zone. We divide the total by the energy charged: that is the effective price per kWh that sets the colour on the map.
With a selected car we use its charging curve (Open EV Data). Peak power is rarely reached in practice: power above 50 kW counts at 70%. Charging loss: 10% (AC), 5% (DC) — the charger bills what comes from the grid.
Prices are shown in the charger’s local currency. For colours, ranking and trips we convert to euro at the daily ECB reference rate; currencies the ECB doesn’t publish (Latin American pesos, African currencies, …) use the daily rates of ExchangeRate-API (open.er-api.com).
Tariffs without a kWh price or session fee, and prices below €0.10/kWh (usually only the roaming cost of a private charger), are never shown as “cheapest”.
What we don’t know (yet)
Prices per charging card (roaming) are not in any open source; we show the ad-hoc price. Driving times are without traffic. Community prices outside the official feeds can be outdated.
Privacy
Without an account we store nothing about you. With an account we store your name, email, garage, favourites and saved trips in our database at Cloudflare. Your location is never stored. You can delete everything on your account page.
Address search uses Photon (Komoot) and routes use OSRM; your query goes directly from your browser to those services.
